Major Fire Strikes Russia's Yaroslavnefteorgsintez Refinery Amidst Ukrainian Drone Attacks
A major fire has struck the Yaroslavnefteorgsintez refinery in Russia, with residents reporting strong flames and a large smoke cloud. The incident has occurred amidst a backdrop of increased drone attacks on Russian oil refineries by Ukraine, which has effectively shut down a quarter of all such facilities in the country.
The Yaroslavnefteorgsintez refinery, one of Russia's largest with a processing capacity of 15 million tons of crude oil per year, has seen its idle time surge to a historic high of 38 percent by the end of September. About 70 percent of this downtime can be attributed to Ukrainian drone attacks, as reported by RBK. The country responsible for this significant operational disruption is Ukraine, which has been increasingly targeting the oil industry to hinder the Russian military's fuel supply and limit war financing through oil exports.
Governor Dmitry Mironov has attributed the fire to technical causes, dismissing any connection to drone attacks. However, the incident comes at a time when Ukraine's drone campaign has significantly impacted Russia's refining capabilities, with about a quarter of all refineries now offline.
The fire at the Yaroslavnefteorgsintez refinery, if it keeps the plant offline, could exacerbate fuel shortages in Russia. With the refinery being one of the largest in the country, its shutdown could have significant implications for the domestic fuel supply. Meanwhile, Ukraine's drone attacks on Russian refineries continue to disrupt operations, with the industry facing increased pressure.
