Mainz's train route, the rosemond, will experience a reduction in length, according to MCV's announcement.
The Mainz Carnival Association 1838 e.V. (MCV) has announced that the Mainz Rosenmontag parade, a beloved tradition in the city, will undergo significant changes due to rising costs and organisational challenges caused by its length.
In a statement, MCV President Hannsgeorg Schönig expressed gratitude to the members and board of the Mainz Fastnacht eG for their initiative in offering to cover the costs for five of the eleven planned motive wagons. This move is expected to help reduce expenses and streamline the organisation of the parade.
Schönig further explained that these measures are necessary due to the organisational problems and rising costs that the MCV has faced for years. The new concept for the parade will focus on Mainz carnival clubs and associations whose purpose is to maintain the carnival tradition.
One of the key changes will be a shorter parade route. The 2021 parade lasted seven hours from Boppstraße to Münsterplatz, but in future years, such as 2026, the long parade could become a safety issue due to the setting sun around 5:45 pm. This means that many unlit wagons would have to drive to their halls in the dark if the parade continues for seven hours.
To participate in the parade, garden and associations from outside will have to pay a fee of 1900 euros, while parade participants without a wagon who are not organised in the eG will have to buy a parade badge for currently 6 euros per person. There will be fewer floats per association in the new concept.
However, exceptions will be made for jubilees, music groups, and major sponsors. The exact names of the clubs excluded from participating in the 2026 Mainz Rosenmontag parade due to new rules have not been publicly specified in available sources.
Associations that will no longer be able to participate in the future, as well as the participating associations, have already been informed about the new rules. This regulation will be enforced more strictly in the future. A final decision by the members of the cooperative is to be made in the fall.
The Mainz Rosenmontag parade, a highlight of the city's carnival season, attracts thousands of spectators each year. These changes are set to ensure the parade's continuation while addressing the challenges faced by the organisers. The MCV president, Hannsgeorg Schönig, expressed his appreciation to the Mainz Fastnacht eG for their support in these efforts.
