Cranking Down on Wind Energy Permits in the Arctic Region: What's the Buzz?

Get the tea on the dwindling permits for wind turbines in the northern regions, specifically Schleswig-Holstein. Here's the lowdown!

Last year, Schleswig-Holstein dished out permits for a colossal 204 new wind turbine installations. Fast-forward a year, and you've got 241 wind turbines springing up in the northernmost state. That's a drop, according to the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Environment, which announced the numbers at the Wind Industry Day in Husum. The total installed capacity from these approved wind turbines zipped past 1.1 gigawatts.

Despite the dip in permits, Schleswig-Holstein powers ahead with speed. The state boasts one of the swiftest permit processes in the country, with permits doled out in an average of 18 months. That's a full 5 months quicker than the national average! Energy Transition State Secretary Joschka Knuth (Greens) cheered the figures, crediting the quick turnaround for the strong wind power growth in Schleswig-Holstein.

As of now, there are 348 wind turbines with a potential capacity of almost two gigawatts in the pipeline. Another 489 installations have been given the green light and are either under construction or ready to roll. Knuth anticipates Schleswig-Holstein will reach its goal of generating 45 terawatt hours of land-based electricity by 2030.

But there's a catch. Knuth urges collaboration with the new federal government to establish reliable framework conditions for an uninterrupted energy transition. Knuth warns that the federal government must forge ahead and steer clear of backward-moving decisions, like introducing temporary grid congestion areas that could throttle renewable expansion. Instead, there needs to be a swift uptick in grid expansion and local price signals. The Renewable Energy Act must also be crafted with a forward-thinking mindset.

"Wind energy is the backbone of Germany's power supply," asserts Baerbel Heidebroek, president of the Federal Association of Wind Energy. The industry is geared up to work hand in hand with the new federal government to keep the expansion pace high, ensuring an independent and cost-effective energy supply.

Schleswig-Holstein isn't the only state grappling with wind energy woes. About forty percent of Germany's wind power capacity arises from the northern federal states. However, the industry grapples with several roadblocks, including overtaxed permit authorities, red tape, and a capacity crunch in numerous states. Keep your eyes peeled for more developments in the wind energy space!
