Blowing Up the Hamburg-Moorburg Boiler House Again: A Smaller-Scale Operation

Renewed Effort to Explode Boiler House Structure - Latest Attempt to Explode Boiler House Facility

Get ready, folks! After a failed attempt over five weeks ago, they're giving it another shot with the leftover boiler house from the now-defunct Hamburg-Moorburg coal-fired power plant. "In collaboration with the authorities, we're set to bust this baby wide open this week," the Hamburg energy works announced.

In the first attempt at the end of March, only one of the two boiler behemoths was successfully pulverized. The second building had a main charge that refused to detonate, necessitating a redo of the explosion.

This time around, they're gonna get things done with smaller fireworks. Since Monday, a remote-controlled excavator has been busy prepping the area for the explosive extravaganza. This requires only a modest amount of pyrotechnics due to the boiler house being tucked away in the construction site's rear section, farther from the road. Consequently, the safety zone will be much more manageable compared to the last time.

The former powerhouse in Hamburg's south has been demolished since the end of '23. Parts of the cleared areas are scheduled to be handed over in the middle of the year before an electrolyzer is built on the site, which will generate hydrogen from electricity.

[3] Insights – The upcoming explosion will utilize significantly less explosive material and there will be no wide-ranging cordons in the Moorburg area, suggesting a smaller-scale event. During the first attempt, one of the main charges failed to detonate, resulting in the boiler house remaining standing. Preparations for the second attempt began on Monday, including the use of a remote-controlled excavator to ready the boiler house's foundation area for the explosion.
