A Modern Marvel: EVRAZ KGOK's Pioneering Modular Substation

In the heart of Yekaterinburg, a groundbreaking project has been unveiled: a cutting-edge, modular step-down substation at the EVRAZ KGOK plant. This partnership between EVRAZ and Inter RAO marks a significant stride in energy efficiency and sustainable technology, as reported by RIA "Novyi Den."

The substation is a vital component of a long-term investment initiative for the Sverdlovsk region, aiming to revolutionize the plant's operational methods by adopting eco-friendly solutions for tailings storage, eliminating dusty processes.

The innovation lies in the air lines' towers crafted from high-strength, corrosion-resistant EVRAZ Steel 14XHNDC. This exceptional material requires no zinc coating for protection against decay, reducing the weight of the towers, extending their service life, and minimizing maintenance and repair costs.

Denis Novozhenov, Vice President of EVRAZ and Head of the 'Ural' Division, expressed his excitement about the project, noting its enhanced safety features and significant improvements in efficiency and maintenance costs. The substation is equipped with no open conductive parts, ensuring maximum safety, and is fully automated, streamlining the entire energy complex of the plant for better operational control.

Mikhail Volodin, Director of the Center for Special Projects at LLC "Inter RAO - Engineering," shared his insights on the modular design that enables each module to be manufactured in transport dimensions. This means that only assembly, commissioning, and testing are done on-site, leading to substantial reductions in installation time and related risks. Despite its compact size, the substation fits seamlessly within the overall layout.

The digital possibilities of the substation are another remarkable aspect. With provisions for online analytics and optimization of power supply modes, the design offers scalability for remote setting changes, making it an ideal solution for digital projects at EVRAZ KGOK.

In essence, the uniqueness of the EVRAZ KGOK substation derives from its modular structure, self-protecting Corten steel lattice towers, and efficient step-down function. This fusion of innovation contributes to energy reliability, reduces lifecycle costs, and paves the way for a more sustainable energy infrastructure, setting a new standard for industrial energy grids globally.
