Isuzu Breaks Ground on U.S. Plant, Aims for 50,000 Vehicles by 2030
Isuzu Motors Ltd., led by Chairman Masanori Katayama, has achieved a significant milestone. On October 1, 2023, the company held a groundbreaking ceremony for a vehicle plant in South Carolina, marking its expansion into the U.S. news market.
Currently, Isuzu exports around 40% of its vehicles sold in North America from Japan, with the remaining production handled by U.S. companies through consignment. However, the company aims to change this dynamic. By 2030, Isuzu plans to produce 50,000 vehicles, including electric trucks, at the new South Carolina plant, strategically responding to U.S. tariffs to reduce their impact on the company's operations.
The construction of this plant has been a long-term goal for Isuzu. The company began vehicle sales in North America in 1984 and reached a record high of 44,000 units sold in fiscal 2023. The new plant, expected to start truck production in 2027, is intended to supply most of Isuzu's vehicles for the North American market.
The new South Carolina plant, once operational, will significantly boost Isuzu's production capacity in the U.S. and help the company navigate trade tariffs more effectively. This expansion reflects Isuzu's commitment to the North American market and its long-term vision for growth and success.
