Initiating the process stipulated under Article 93 (2) of the Treaty, as mandated by the Commission.
The German Railway (DB) has announced the closure of the route between Pegnitz, district of Bayreuth, and Hersbruck, district of Nuremberg Land. This closure is due to ongoing technical inspections of several bridges in the Pegnitz valley, which are part of renovations and modernizations of the route.
The closure affects commuter travel between Pegnitz and Hersbruck, but some regional trains will continue to operate on the Hersbruck-Nuremberg route. The affected trains include regional trains 30, 31, 32, and 38.
In an effort to maintain connectivity during the closure, replacement buses will run hourly from Pegnitz to Hersbruck. These buses will also serve connections between Bayreuth and Nuremberg, Pegnitz and Nuremberg, and Neuhaus and Nuremberg.
The inspections, renovations, and modernizations aim to improve the infrastructure of the route, which has been planned for some time. The complex topography of the Pegnitz valley adds to the complexity of these works.
The technical inspections and modernizations of the bridges in the Pegnitz Valley are expected to take several years, with the reopening of the line planned for 2026. The press office of the DB has announced that other regional trains will operate on the Hersbruck-Nuremberg route during this period.
The DB has also announced that replacement buses will be provided as an alternative for commuter travel between Pegnitz and Hersbruck during the closure. The route is currently not operational.
The closure does not affect all trains on the route, as some will continue to operate. The DB has emphasized that the inspections, renovations, and modernizations are necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of the railway system in the long term.
