The city of Bottrop is leading an exciting new climate project, Prima.Klima.Kirchhellen, which aims to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient future. The kick-off event for this project took place on February 13, 2025, marking the beginning of a journey that is scheduled to be completed by 2029.

The Prima.Klima.Kirchhellen project is part of a larger, intermunicipal initiative known as Prima. Klima. Ruhrmetropole., a project of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipalities, Construction and Digitalization of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The goal is to create eight experimental and innovative energy neighbourhoods across the Ruhr region by 2029.

The project in Bottrop specifically focuses on expanding the district heating network and promoting energy and heat advice for building renovation. The city is committed to securing additional funding to implement project ideas in the neighbourhood, with additional funding from KfW Bank and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia earmarked for creating neighbourhood concepts and renovation management.

The objectives of the project are far-reaching. They include strengthening the village centre, enhancing climate resilience, and implementing greening measures. The project also aims to promote the energy transition, smart city & digitalization, circular economy, mobility, energy cooperative, and social and climate-friendly development in the neighbourhood.

In line with these objectives, the project prioritises climate adaptation and enhancement of public spaces. Measures to reduce heat and heavy rain issues will be a key focus, ensuring that the neighbourhood is not only sustainable but also resilient to the challenges posed by a changing climate.

In addition to the project, the city of Bottrop is also hosting a free seminar on 'Climate-friendly Gardening' on July 3, 2025. This event aims to educate and inspire local residents on how they can contribute to a greener and more sustainable city.

As the project progresses, more details about the organisation involved in the Prima.Klima.Kirchhellen project and their role will likely become available. For now, however, the city of Bottrop and its partners are forging ahead, determined to make Kirchhellen a shining example of sustainable urban development.
