IndiGo Sets Record With 500-Aircraft Airbus Order, Boosting Indian Aviation
In a significant boost for Indian aviation, IndiGo has set a new record by placing a firm order for 500 A320 Family aircraft from Airbus. This deal, the largest single purchase agreement in commercial aviation history, took place during the first Airbus board meeting in India, highlighting the growing interest in the country's aviation sector.
The meeting, held in New Delhi on Thursday, was attended by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, and Airbus Chairman René Obermann. During the discussions, Airbus expressed its intention to substantially increase its annual sourcing of components and services from India, aiming to reach $2 billion by 2030. Currently, the company sources components and services worth approximately $1.4 billion from India.
Airbus also explored possibilities of increasing investments and deepening collaboration in India. The company, led by CEO René Obermann, is considering significant investments in the country over the next few years. These plans include expanding its industrial footprint through the establishment of manufacturing and research facilities. The aim is to strengthen Airbus's presence in the rapidly growing Indian aviation market and collaborate on aerospace technology development.
The record-breaking aircraft order by IndiGo, coupled with Airbus's plans to increase sourcing and investment in India, signals a promising future for the Indian aviation industry.
