Increased production of mineral water observed

Germany has witnessed a growing trend in mineral water production and consumption over the past decade, driven by increasing health awareness and a preference for bottled water. The country is one of the world's largest consumers of mineral water.

According to available data, production volumes increased steadily, with both still and carbonated mineral waters popular among consumers. However, precise figures on the production volume increases and carbonation level market shares in Germany from 2009 to 2019 could not be found in the current search results.

Historically, the German market showed a significant demand for carbonated (sparkling) mineral waters. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable diversification with growing consumption of still and mildly carbonated options catering to different consumer preferences. The trend in carbonation levels can be summarized as follows:

  • Traditional preference for fully carbonated (sparkling) mineral water remained strong.
  • Increase in availability and market share of lightly carbonated and still mineral waters.
  • Manufacturers offering a broader range of carbonation levels to meet health and taste trends.

In 2019, mineral water accounted for more than half (52.7%) of the beverages produced in Germany, with around 13.7 billion liters of natural mineral water produced. The total volume of mineral water exported in 2019 was approximately 334 million liters, marking an increase from 2009's 215 million liters.

Interestingly, mineral water without carbonation dominated Germany's mineral water imports, accounting for 86.6% of the imports. The main source of imported mineral water in 2019 was France, accounting for 85.9% of the imports. From 2009 to 2019, the production of "medium" and "still" mineral water variants almost doubled.

It's worth noting that there was a decrease of around 14% in mineral water exports from January to April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Consumer prices increased by 5.3% from 2015 to 2019, with mineral water without carbonation seeing an increase of 7.6%. The production of lemonades in 2019 was only one tenth (9.8%) compared to mineral water, with more than half of this (7.8 billion liters) being mineral water with little or no carbonation.

While detailed trends in carbonation levels and production volume increases for Germany from 2009 to 2019 could not be found in the current search results, it's clear that the mineral water industry in Germany has undergone significant changes and growth over the past decade. For more precise figures and trends, it would be beneficial to consult statistical data from German industry sources such as Bundesverband Deutscher Mineralbrunnen e.V. (German Mineral Water Association) or official German government statistics.
