Berlin's transportation landscape is set for a significant change with the opening of the Dresden Line, scheduled for mid-December 2025. This 16-kilometer new construction between Südkreuz and Blankenfelde marks the largest new opening in the region in many years.

Currently, the trains on the Dresden Line run via the Anhalter Bahn, but with the expansion, they will no longer pass through Gesundbrunnen and Ostkreuz. Instead, they will travel via Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz. This change is expected to bring faster connections to BER Airport, with the travel time from Berlin's main station reduced to just over 20 minutes.

The Dresden Line's opening will also impact the RB24 and RE20 connections. The RB24, which currently starts from Lübbenau in the Spreewald and stops at Alt-Schönefeld, will be extended to BER Airport. Simultaneously, the new line RE20 will run from Lübbenau in the Spreewald to BER Airport. Both these lines will run via Berlin Ostkreuz, resulting in two trains per hour in the direction of the airport.

Deutsche Bahn and the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) have announced that the Airport Express (FEX) will run every 15 minutes instead of every 30 minutes after the Dresden Line's opening. This improvement in frequency will undoubtedly benefit commuters and travellers alike.

The RE32 is another line scheduled to run to BER Airport, starting from Oranienburg, once an hour from February 2026. The opening of the Dresden Line is indeed a game-changer for Berlin's transportation infrastructure.

Berlin's Senator for Transportation, Ute Bonde (CDU), is pleased with these faster connections to BER Airport. The Dresden Line's opening is a testament to the ongoing efforts to improve Berlin's transportation system and provide better services to its citizens and visitors.

In summary, the opening of the Dresden Line in December 2025 promises to revolutionise Berlin's transportation infrastructure, offering faster and more frequent services to BER Airport, and marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation development.
