Hyundai's i30 N will challenge the dominance of the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST.
The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as Hyundai prepares to unveil its latest creation - the i30 N. This hot hatch is set to challenge the dominance of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST, offering a unique blend of power, handling, and style.
Performance Specs
The Hyundai i30 N boasts a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 276 bhp in its high-performance "P Package" specification. This power output makes the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST look like weaklings. In base form, the i30 N produces 184kW, still a formidable figure.
The i30 N will come with a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed dual-clutch auto, available from September 2019. The Focus ST and Hyundai i30 N share nearly identical power output, with the Focus ST having a slight edge on transmission options due to its 7-speed automatic choice. The Golf GTI S is a bit less powerful, but its refined driving experience cannot be denied.
Driving and Handling
The Focus ST is praised for its sharp handling, "track-ready" chassis, and a limited-slip differential that helps grip. The i30 N, on the other hand, is noted for being a very good driver’s car and a distinct alternative to mainstream rivals. The Golf GTI offers a well-balanced suspension, light yet accurate steering, and a subtle but urgent power delivery. The manual gearbox is favored for engagement, but the DSG is excellent for daily use.
Features and Technology
The Ford Focus ST boasts modern features such as matrix LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, a large Sync4 infotainment screen, and performance seats. The Golf GTI now includes VW’s IQ.DRIVE advanced driver assistance system as standard, featuring adaptive cruise, lane centering, blind spot monitoring, and emergency assist. The Hyundai i30 N, however, is less commonly detailed on tech specifics, positioning itself more as a pure hot hatch enthusiast’s car rather than a tech-laden one.
Aesthetics and Extras
The exterior of the i30 N will have its own grille, rear diffuser, and side sills to set it apart. It will ride on 19-inch wheels wearing Pirelli P-Zero rubber. The exhaust system will have a valve to uncork its muffler for maximum aural drama. The interior will feature deeply bolstered front seats, an N-specific steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shifter knob. A Porsche-like driving mode dial will also adorn the dashboard.
Sales Prospects
Despite its impressive offerings, sales of the Hyundai i30 N are not expected to be high. Scott Grant, COO of Hyundai Australia, has expressed pessimism about the sales of the i30 N. However, for those who appreciate a raw, driver-focused hot hatch, the i30 N is shaping up to be a compelling choice.
The i30 N will go into production in a factory in the Czech Republic in December this year. It is beginning to look like Korea's first truly lust-worthy car, offering a unique blend of power, handling, and style that sets it apart from its rivals.
