Hyundai E&C Wins $3.16B Iraq Seawater Treatment Plant Deal
Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has secured a major contract worth ₩4.39 trillion (approximately $3.16 billion) to build a seawater treatment facility in Iraq. This is the company's largest project in Iraq since completing the Karbala oil refinery in 2023. The project, expected to take 49 months, is a joint investment involving TotalEnergies of France, QatarEnergy LNG, and Iraq's Basra Oil Company.
The facility, part of the Common Seawater Supply Project, will be located at Khor Al Zubair Port. It will have a daily processing capacity of five million barrels, supplying freshwater to nearby oil fields such as West Qurna and Rumaila. While Hyundai E&C is the main contractor, details of other participating firms remain scarce. Typically, such large projects involve local and international subcontractors, but as of now, no official list of partners has been released. Hyundai E&C is expected to involve more companies as the project progresses.
Hyundai E&C's latest project in Iraq is a significant undertaking, with the potential to boost crude oil prices in the region. Although the main contractor is known, the full list of participating firms is yet to be disclosed. As the project advances, more details about the involved companies are likely to emerge.
