Grain Ship Leak Contaminates 50m of Mittelland Canal in Hanover
An environmental incident unfolded on the Mittelland Canal near the Anderten lock in Hanover on Friday afternoon. The incident involved an inland ship loaded with grain that leaked operating materials, contaminating a 50-meter stretch of the waterway. The Hanover Police's harbor police discovered the pollution during an inspection and alerted the fire department.
The Hannover Fire Department swiftly responded, deploying 12 emergency service personnel. They erected oil barriers in front of and behind the ship to contain the spill, which was approximately 0.5 meters wide. The fire department's operations concluded around 18:00, having successfully implemented initial measures. However, further actions are now the responsibility of the Lower Water Authority of the Hanover Region.
Investigations into the cause of the incident are underway. The police have initiated their own probe, but the fire department has not provided any information on the possible cause. The regional control center first alerted the fire department to the water pollution on the moored inland vessel.
The environmental incident at the Mittelland Canal near the Anderten lock in Hanover has been contained, but investigations continue to determine the cause of the spill. The fire department's prompt response was crucial in preventing further spread of the contamination. The Lower Water Authority will now oversee the next steps in addressing the environmental impact.
