German Beer Sales Plummet in August 2025
August 2025 saw a significant downturn in beer sales across Germany and neighboring countries. The German beer industry reported a year-to-date decrease of 6.9 percent, with total sales in August alone plummeting by 14.8 percent.
Bavaria, the country's largest beer supplier, suffered the most, with sales collapsing by 19.9 percent. Baden-Württemberg followed with a staggering 39.2 percent decrease. The poor performance was not isolated to Germany. Swiss breweries recorded a 13 percent drop, while Austria saw a 7 percent decrease by the end of June.
The decline was felt both domestically and internationally. Domestic sales in Germany fell by 14.4 percent, while exports dropped by 17 percent. Sales to third countries were particularly hard hit, with a 23.6 percent decrease. Beer mixed drinks also saw a significant decrease of 11 percent.
The German beer industry is facing challenging times. Poor consumer climate, anti-alcohol campaigns, unsummery weather, and high beer prices in catering have all contributed to the decline. With total sales in August 2025 around 6.39 million hectoliters, the industry is looking for ways to reverse this trend.
