Ford Recalls 41,000 F-150 Lightning Electric Trucks Over Steering Defect

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of approximately 41,000 units of the 2024 and 2025 model year F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks. The recall, which affects vehicles produced between February 14, 2024, and April 14, 2025, is due to a manufacturing defect in the front upper control arm, specifically the ball joint nut assembly.

The defective nut can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. The issue stems from a potentially loose or improperly torqued ball joint nut in the front suspension system of the F-150 Lightning trucks.

In the U.S., the recall affects around 29,501 vehicles. In Canada, the recall affects 11,409 units, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada.

The recall applies only to the 2024 and 2025 model year F-150 Lightning pickups and does not affect older or newer models.

Ford is notifying owners and addressing the defects through dealer inspections and repairs free of charge. If the nuts are found to be loose or missing, the knuckle and nuts will be replaced entirely. If the ball joint nuts are within specification, they will still be replaced as a precaution during the inspection.

Owners of affected F-150 Lightning trucks will need to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for an inspection. The documents for this recall are posted on the Transport Canada (#2025-286) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, 25V341) websites.

For the most current status or possible Canadian-specific updates, owners or interested parties should contact Ford Customer Service or check NHTSA and Transport Canada recall databases.

It is common that recalls announced in the U.S. by Ford are also issued in Canada either simultaneously or shortly after regulatory review.

Separately, there is a recall for select 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning trucks (5 units) related to a brake fluid leak caused by loosening front brake jounce hose bracket screws, not the ball joint nuts. This small recall covers trucks built between March 13 and April 24, 2025, and is different from the suspension ball joint nut issue.

If you own a 2024 or 2025 F-150 Lightning pickup truck and are unsure if your vehicle is affected, it is recommended that you check the NHTSA or Transport Canada recall databases or contact Ford Customer Service for clarification.

The recall of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric trucks is not limited to the industry of automotive, as it also affects the sectors of finance, since Ford is investing resources to rectify the issue, and transportation, as the defective steering component may pose a risk during vehicle operation. Despite the separate recall for a small number of trucks due to a brake fluid leak issue, only the 2024 and 2025 model year F-150 Lightning pickups are affected by the current manufacturing defect.
