Ford Intends to Launch an Economical Electric Pickup for $30,000, featuring a Compact Battery and on a Novel, Universal Chassis
Ford is set to launch a midsize electric pickup truck in 2027, marking a significant step in the company's $5 billion investment in electric vehicles (EVs). The new model, priced around $30,000, will be built on Ford's new Universal EV Platform, designed for affordability and efficiency[1][5].
The upcoming electric pickup truck will be roughly the size of the current gas-powered Ford Maverick but will offer interior space comparable to a Toyota RAV4, including an F-150 Lightning-style front trunk ("frunk") and cargo bed[1][5].
Key Features and Details
The new electric pickup truck will boast a series of impressive features. It is expected to have a performance that outperforms the Ford Mustang twin-turbo, capable of accelerating to 60 mph in under 5 seconds[1][5]. The vehicle will be designed to seat five adults comfortably with room for bikes, surfboards, and work equipment[1].
Standard technology across all models will include Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driver-assistance system[2]. The truck will also feature a floating touchscreen with over-the-air (OTA) updates and support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto[4].
The battery, expected to have a smaller capacity of around 51 kWh, supports the compact design[2]. This capacity is less than some competitors but is compatible with most public chargers and significantly cheaper to produce.
Manufacturing and Production
The vehicle will be produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with new manufacturing processes that are 40% faster and use fewer components to reduce costs and improve reliability[1][2]. This nearly $2 billion investment at the Louisville plant will create 2,200 jobs.
A redesigned wiring harness in the new pickup will be 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter than the one in the Mustang Mach-E. Ford's new Universal Assembly Process will contribute to the profitability of the electric pickup from day one. This process will require 40% fewer workstations and speed up assembly by 15%.
Battery Production
The battery packs for the electric pickup will be produced at the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. The new pickup will support both lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistries. The base version of the new pickup will use LFP cells produced in the U.S., while higher-range trims could opt for NMC technology.
Market Position
Ford aims to offer a lower cost of ownership than vehicles like the Tesla Model Y and replace gas SUVs such as the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair, both of which will be discontinued by 2026[3]. This new electric pickup is part of Ford’s strategy to make electric vehicles more accessible across various vehicle segments, marking a pivotal "Model T moment"[1][5]. Production will begin in 2027, likely making it a 2028 model year launch[5].
The new pickup will be named differently from Ford's current EV lineup, which includes the F-150 Lightning. More details about the new electric pickup will be revealed in the coming months as the launch date approaches.
