Breaking News: New Johann-Weiß-Steg Bridge Officially Opened in Munich

After a challenging construction process, the new Johann-Weiß-Steg bridge was officially opened in Munich on Thursday morning. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Alexander Putz, members of the city council's building committee, representatives of the department for building and environment, and officials from the executing companies and involved planning offices.

The bridge, located over the Kleine Isar between Innere Regensburger Straße and Franz-Höger or Johann-Weiß-Weg, serves as an important utility bridge for the city's supply lines. It is a steel composite construction, 2 meters wider than the previous one, with an increased width of 5.75 meters allowing for separate traffic lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

The construction of the bridge pillar and abutments was hindered by flooding last year, but the complex installation of the bridge supports and connection to the adjacent street area was completed by spring this year. The prefabricated steel bridge supports, weighing up to 45 tons, were lifted onto the new pillar in December, marking a crucial step for further construction progress.

The old bridge structure was severely damaged and renovation was no longer economically viable, making the new bridge eagerly awaited by the city's residents. The bridge construction meets modern requirements and has unique features. Existing power, data, and gas lines run over the bridge, with the new structure also accommodating a district heating line of the city works.

Mayor Alexander Putz expressed satisfaction with the high funding for the project, with the contract sum for bridge construction being 2.567 million euros and total project costs around 3.5 million euros. Funding for the project comes from the federal special program 'City and Country', amounting to 2.142 million euros.

Mayor Putz, who holds the position of Oberbürgermeister and is involved in encouraging company management, also noted the bridge's importance in the city's supply lines. The widened bridge runs along one of the city's main cycling routes, further enhancing its utility and appeal. The new Johann-Weiß-Steg bridge was officially opened for use after the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony.
