European patent chief highlights rising opportunity for advancement due to US instability

Europe must seize the opportunities arising from global trade transformations to reclaim lost competitiveness, according to Antonio Campinos, President of the European Patent Organisation.

Campinos laments that Europe has been falling behind in productivity and innovation over the last two decades, with China and the US surging ahead. He asserts that Europe's focus on excessive regulations while neglecting innovation has led to this predicament.

"We lost productivity when we compare ourselves to the Chinese and to the US," said Campinos.

Moreover, he criticizes Europe's risk-averse approach to technological development, claiming it stifles innovation and hinders the launch of new ideas. Campinos praises the US for embracing failure as a stepping stone to success, which he sees as key to their lead in emerging technologies like AI.

The European Patent Organisation is accountable for approximately 200,000 patent applications annually, a figure dwarfed by numbers from the US and China. Campinos acknowledges this disparity between applications from Europe, the US, and China, and believes that European regulation may have gone too far, dissuading inventors from staying in Europe.

However, Campinos sees potential for Europe in the current political landscape. He suggests that the instability caused by a more protectionist America and Trump's trade disputes, could create opportunities for Europe if its leaders are ready to capitalize on them.

"Humankind is never as creative as when it is in need, and we are in need," he said.
