Recent planned developments for Playa de Palma have largely remained unrealized. Current efforts by the city of Palma aim to break this trend, focusing on the Ballermann area.

€300 million allocated for Ballermann's rebuilding project

Palma, Spain — A 300 million euro overhaul and modernization project is set to reinvent Playa de Palma, the German tourist favorite parties strip on Mallorca, over the next decade. The ambitous 35-point initiative was unveiled by Palma's Mayor Jaime Martínez to journalists in the island's capital.

The refurbishment plan aims to enhance the livability of the Playa, Martínez explained. However, some aspects of the project remain vague, with the mayor outlining intentions to engage with industry and residents associations to further develop the ideas. Notably, 80 million euros will be invested in beautifying the second and third rows of the beach, including road and sidewalk renovations.

The mobility infrastructure is also set for improvements. The Playa will be connected to the "BiciPalma" public bicycle rental network, and new park-and-ride parking lots with train line access are under consideration to alleviate congestion. Addressing the housing shortage, outdated one- and two-star hotels will be converted into residential units, with additional homes planned in the Ballermann hinterland.

This isn't the first time plans to rejuvenate the Playa have been proposed, yet most have failed to materialize. The city hall has been laboring over the past two years to upgrade the sewerage system and street lighting near the beach, halting construction during the tourist season to avoid disturbances. Construction will resurface during the winter this year as well.

The revitalization project will strive to upgrade both the aesthetics and functionality of Playa de Palma, catering to both locals and visitors alike.

  1. To improve transportation within Playa de Palma, the "BiciPalma" public bicycle rental network will be connected to the area, and new park-and-ride parking lots with train line access are under consideration as a means to alleviate congestion.
  2. In collaboration with industry and residents associations, the mayor aims to further develop the 35-point initiative for Playa de Palma's modernization, with a focus on investing 80 million euros in enhancing the beach's second and third rows, including road and sidewalk renovations.
  3. In an effort to address the housing shortage in Playa de Palma, outdated one- and two-star hotels will be converted into residential units, while additional homes will be planned in the Ballermann hinterland, both working to reinforce the real-estate sector in the region.
