Electrical vehicle (EV) giants General Motors (GM) and EVgo plan to install 400 charging stations in urban centers across the country.

In a significant move to bolster electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, General Motors Co. and EVgo have announced a collaboration to install 400 DC fast-charging stations in major metropolitan areas across the United States. This partnership, announced on September 12, aims to address the current lack of convenient EV charging options, as highlighted in a February study from J.D. Power.

The collaboration does not specify the financial terms of the agreement, but some funding will be reallocated to offer a more premium charging experience at the new co-branded locations. The first new chargers from this collaboration are expected to open in 2025.

Each flagship station by GM Energy and EVgo will have up to 20 charging stalls, and many of these flagship locations will feature 350kW fast chargers with ample lighting, canopies, security cameras, and pull-through configurations for easier access. These customer-centric charging stations are designed to set a new benchmark for charging infrastructure.

The deployment of these charging stations will continue in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas. While the locations of these charging stations have not been specified in detail, many of them will be located near amenities such as shopping, dining, and coffee shops.

GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer stated that the new collaboration will take EV charging access to a new level. EVgo President Dennis Kish echoed this sentiment, stating that the future of EV charging includes larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and customer-centric features like pull-through access, canopies, and convenient amenities.

The collaboration between GM and EVgo will result in a total of 2,850 DC fast charging stalls, adding to the current total fast charging stall count, which is expected to reach 2,000 by the end of this year. This partnership is a significant step towards improving the convenience and accessibility of EV charging for drivers across the United States.

As of August 2023, the 1,000th fast charging stall by GM and EVgo was opened, marking a milestone in the partnership's progress. With the first new chargers slated to open in 2025, EV drivers can look forward to a more convenient and premium charging experience in the near future.
