Euro's Shine: An Unpredictable Tango with the Greenback
An Unscripted Discourse by Your Pal, Yours Truly
Dollar's significant drop is evident.
The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, aka Christine Lagarde, can't help but wear a hint of a smug grin. Inflation in the Eurozone's been keepin' its cool, and the ol' man Euro's been holdin' his own against the almighty buck since the start of the year, clockin' in at around 1.16 dollars per euro, a solid 13% gain. Turns out ol' Milty Friedman was full of it about the Euro's bleak future. The Euro's ride'n high, thanks in no small part to the heavy liftin' of its founders like Wim Duisenberg, Otmar Issing, and Jean-Claude Trichet. The Bundesbank's DNA is twisted up tight in the ECB. No Tower of Babel's risen in Frankfurt's east end, contrary to what some crystal-gazin' soothsayers have uttered once in a while.
But take a closer peek, and you'll see the Euro's not been lyin' steady in the bed with the dollar since the grand start of 2021. Exchange rate data shows the Euro swayin' back 'n forth with the dollar without a clear, persistent upward trend. In fact, the Euro-to-dollar rate was hoverin' around roughly 1.13 USD per euro in early 2025, a level similar to what it's been in the past, with nary a strong overall strengthening trend since 2021[1][3][5].
Now, Werner Ruppel's article on the Euro's dance with the dollar centers mostly around the economic and geopolitical factors that play into the game. A stronger Euro against the dollar often means an increase in the ol' Eurozone's economic confidence, a shift in trade balances, and possible changes to inflation and monetary policies. It's a big deal, economically and politically, not just for Euroland but for the world at large[2].
So there ya have it, the Euro's been tangoin' with the dollar, not quite the consistent winners we thought it'd be, but it's still holdin' its own. And with all the economic and geopolitical smoke swirling around, it's anyone's guess where this dance gonna lead.
