Disruption on Major Munich Commuter Route Lasts Weeks – Essential Information for Passengers

The German Railway (Deutsche Bahn) has announced a closure of the railway line between Munich and Mühldorf, affecting regional train lines RB40 and RE4 until 15 September at 7:11 am. This closure is part of a modernization project that includes the renovation of the signal box technology.

During the closure period, passengers travelling between Munich and Mühldorf can expect significant restrictions in rail traffic. However, alternative transportation options have been arranged. The German Railway is deploying buses as a replacement for the cancelled trains, and these buses will serve all intermediate stops between Mühldorf and Munich East/Friedenstr.

Buses from Munich to Mühldorf will only stop in Ampfing for exiting passengers on the route between Mühldorf, Ampfing, and Messe City East. Direct buses are available between Dorfen and Messe City East, and between Mühldorf, Ampfing, and Messe City East. Buses depart from Messestadt Ost at Willy-Brandt-Allee, Stop 5.

U-Bahn Line 2 of the MVG is a replacement for passengers travelling between Messe City East and Munich East or Munich Central Station during the railway closure.

The modernization of the signal box technology is the reason for the closure. The renovation is being carried out by the German Railway on a heavily used commuter route. The modern electronic signal boxes (ESTW) will replace the last four mechanical signal boxes along the route, with the first electronic signal boxes at the route in Höllkopfen and Thann-Matzbach scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2025.

In a second construction phase, Schwindegg and Weidenbach/Heldenstein will follow. It's important to note that further closures of the railway line are to be expected in the future.

If you are planning travel on this route soon, it's recommended to check Deutsche Bahn’s official website or customer service for current notices about any service interruptions between Munich and Mühldorf. This will provide you with detailed schedule adjustments, expected delays, or alternative transport options if a closure is in effect.
