Wall Street Treads Cautiously as US-China Trade Talks Progress

Dialogues in commerce spark optimism among American business investors

Wall Street investors are showing signs of guarded enthusiasm regarding the US-China trade talks. On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average of prestigious stocks closed at 42,866 points, up 0.3%. The more comprehensive S&P 500 and the tech-savvy Nasdaq both witnessed a 0.6% increase, closing at 6,028 and 19,663 points respectively.

Reports indicate that trade negotiations between the world's largest economies are advancing. Monday's discussions between high-ranking representatives endured nearly seven hours. Further discussions were expected on Tuesday, with potential continuation on Wednesday. "There's a glimmer of hope when progress is visible, but the final outcome is still uncertain," says Laura Cooper, chief strategist at asset manager Nuveen.

Experts remain skeptical about a speedy resolution and are considering the implications of an ambiguous agreement. Jonas Goltermann of Capital Economics posits that market participants do not anticipate the complete abolition of tariffs. However, the US is reportedly aiming for a basic agreement regarding rare earths with China, a crucial development in the ongoing negotiations. China has yet to comment on the details or the meeting's outcome.

Jochen Stanzl, senior analyst at broker CMC Markets, echoes this skepticism. "Both sides seem eager to reach a deal, but we'll have to see if they can agree on the specifics soon."

Vaccine Makers under the Microscope

Shares of vaccine manufacturers enjoyed the spotlight post US Health Minister Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s dismissal of a panel of vaccine experts. Moderna, BioNTech, and Novavax each spiraled downward by 1.6% to 2.8%, while Pfizer inched upward by 1.4%.

The parent company of Google, Alphabet, garnered attention, growing by 1.4%. According to insiders, OpenAI plans to leverage Google's cloud service to accommodate the rising demand for ChatGPT's computational power.

However, Tencent Music fell short of sustaining its initial surge. The US-listed shares of the Chinese music streaming platform dropped 0.9% after an initial rise of up to 4.8%. Tencent Music aims to expand its business through the acquisition of the Ximalaya platform, focusing on podcasts and audiobooks offerings.
