Dangote Refinery Decreases Fuel Price to ₦820 per Liter
In a significant move aimed at boosting Nigeria's economy and providing relief to consumers, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a reduction in the ex-depot (gantry) price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. Effective from August 12, 2025, the price has been lowered from ₦850 to ₦820 per litre [1][4][5].
This price adjustment, announced by the Dangote Group's Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, has led to a ripple effect in the downstream market. Major players, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Dangote partners like MRS and Ardova, have followed suit, lowering retail petrol prices [2].
In some locations such as Lagos and Ogun, retail petrol prices have dropped from as high as ₦950 per litre to as low as ₦865 per litre. Generally, prices now range around ₦865 to ₦890 per litre, depending on the filling station and location [2].
However, some Nigerians believe that the prices need to fall further—to between ₦200 and ₦500 per litre—to significantly affect the economy and inflation [2]. The refinery's price cut aligns with its commitment to consistent and uninterrupted fuel supply [2].
The Dangote Refinery has not decreased the price of PMS below the rates of fuel importers as of the latest information. Neither has it sought a ban on fuel imports or oil marketers, nor has it withdrawn any ₦100 billion lawsuit against the NMDPRA, NNPCL, or oil marketers [3].
As part of its sustainability drive, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery plans to roll out 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for nationwide fuel distribution, starting August 15, 2025 [6]. This initiative is expected to further enhance the refinery's commitment to Nigeria's economic development and sustainable energy solutions.
