Customs Seize €160k in Gold, Sunglasses in Tax Evasion Bust
Customs officers in the Aschaffenburg area have seized a significant amount of gold jewelry and luxury items, including designer sunglasses, during a routine vehicle check. The total value of the seized goods exceeds 100,000 euros, with suspected tax evasion and money laundering involved.
The discovery was made when customs officers inspected a BMW X5. The vehicle's occupants confessed to not paying customs duties for the goods found inside. The subsequent investigation is being handled by the Frankfurt am Main customs investigation office. Among the seized items were gold jewelry worth over 100,000 euros and approximately 160 designer sunglasses valued at over 50,000 euros. The tax loss due to evaded import duties amounts to around 34,000 euros.
In a related incident, customs officers in Schweinfurt seized luxury items and smuggled cigarettes worth over 150,000 euros. The seized items included gold jewelry, sunglasses, and untaxed tobacco products. A person named Markus L. is suspected of money fraud related to these discoveries, which occurred in May 2025.
The seizures highlight the ongoing efforts of customs authorities to combat tax evasion and smuggling activities. The investigation into the suspected money laundering case is ongoing, with the Frankfurt am Main customs investigation office leading the probe.
