Customs Bust: Luxury Items, Cigarettes Worth €150k Seized in Germany
Customs officers in Schweinfurt have made a significant seizure of untaxed, high-value luxury items and smuggled cigarettes, worth over 150,000 euros. The seizure, which took place during a vehicle check in the Aschaffenburg area on May 3rd, has led to a criminal investigation involving a 30-year-old Romanian citizen suspected of money laundering.
The seized goods included gold jewelry, sunglasses, and tobacco, with a total value of over 150,000 euros. The items were found to have price tags and were prepared for resale. The vehicle occupants did not pay any customs duties for the goods upon entry into the EU. The tax evasion amount was estimated to be around 34,000 euros. The further criminal investigation has been taken over by the customs investigation office in Frankfurt am Main.
The seizure of these luxury items and smuggled cigarettes highlights the ongoing efforts of customs officers to combat tax evasion and smuggling. The investigation into the suspected money laundering case is ongoing, with the 30-year-old Romanian citizen as the primary suspect.
