Continuation of Neglected Cleanup Efforts at Picture County Mill, as Nova Scotia's Environmental Officer Remains Mute

The Northern Pulp mill, located approximately 130 kilometers northeast of Halifax in Abercrombie Point, Nova Scotia, has ceased operations due to financial difficulties. The mill, which produced bleached kraft pulp, is currently under creditor protection, and the future of its cleanup remains unclear.

Environment Minister Tim Halman has stated that there are 'a lot of moving parts' regarding the cleanup of the mill site, and he will provide more information at a later date. However, it is not yet known if the public will be required to fund the cleanup.

The company took this step after a feasibility study concluded it could not achieve the 14 per cent internal rate of return required in a settlement agreement with the province to develop a bioproducts facility near Liverpool, N.S. The exact cost of the cleanup plan for the Northern Pulp mill site remains unknown.

Government officials in Nova Scotia have not revealed a cleanup plan for the shuttered mill site in Pictou County. The person officially responsible for implementing the waste disposal plan for the decommissioned Northern Pulp plant in Pictou County is Gerry Byrne.

The mill's creditor protection process includes a court-supervised sale of its assets. It is uncertain if any of the $15 million set aside for a closure and cleanup plan will remain if the company files for bankruptcy.

Halman also mentioned he has not seen a cost estimate for a cleanup plan, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Northern Pulp mill site. The public will have to wait for further information from the government and the company to understand the next steps in the cleanup process.
