Construction of the Kundziņsala overpass in Riga will be delayed beyond its original schedule.
The construction of the 863.5 metre-long overpass connecting the Freeport of Rīga area in Kundziņsala and Tvaika Street in Sarkandaugava is currently approximately 40% complete. This significant project aims to divert freight traffic away from the city centre, creating bypass routes and reducing congestion.
The overpass, once completed, will connect to various key road networks, including the Daudersala overpass, the Austrumu Main Road, the Dienvidu Bridge, Čakstes Avenue, and eventually the Riga bypass, allowing freight traffic to bypass the city's daily traffic.
Annis Zeltiņš, Freeport of Riga manager, highlighted that the flow of cars to Kundziņšala often exceeds 1,000 trucks per day. The new overpass will serve as a link to the new heart of the Freeport of Riga, providing an efficient route for goods transport.
State Real Estate will build a new customs control point at the overpass, further facilitating the movement of goods. The process of driving the central steel span across Sarkandaugava started last December, with the span structure being assembled on the Sarkandaugava bank and driven across the water zone in stages over four months.
Traffic on Tvaika Street is expected to start on the new carriageways this year. Despite the progress, the completion of the Kundziņšala overpass project has been delayed and will not be finished by January 1, 2023. Edgars Vaivods, a representative of the company RK Link, stated that the delays are due to obstacles discovered during construction works.
The project is not expected to cost more than the initial €82.6 million budget. The exact company leading the project for the construction of the Kundziņsala crossing is not specified in the provided information. Once completed, the overpass will be a significant addition to the infrastructure of Riga, improving the flow of goods and reducing traffic congestion in the city centre.
