Construction begins on railway connecting Querétaro and Irapuato, organized by the government.
The Querétaro-Irapuato rail line, a long-awaited project for the residents of Querétaro, has officially begun construction. Governor Mauricio Kuri expressed that the new line will significantly enhance mobility within his state, while Guanajuato Governor Libia García praised the rail line's potential to contribute to the competitiveness of her state. The project, with an estimated cost of US $5.3 billion, will feature a non-electrified twin-track section with a maximum speed of 200 km/hr. The line will extend from the Mexico City-Querétaro line, strengthening the Bajío's connection with the nation's capital. Six stations will be strategically located along the route: Querétaro, Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, Villagrán/Cortázar, Salamanca, and Irapuato. The line will also boast nine vehicle overpasses and two viaducts for interaction with industry and rail freight services. The Querétaro-Irapuato line is part of a larger project aiming to build 3,000 km of track during a six-year term. According to estimates, the line will generate 1,518 direct jobs and 8,255 indirect jobs. During the groundbreaking ceremony, both governors praised the cooperation between their governments and the federal government. The Querétaro-Mexico City train, a dream of Queretanos for over 46 years, will now become a reality, as this new connectivity with the west will be fulfilled. The line is expected to boost connectivity and development in the Bajío region, linking it eventually to Guadalajara and western Mexico. With a daily demand of around 30,000 people between the Apaseo El Grande stations and Mexico City, the rail line is set to benefit approximately 2 million people. Trains, as highlighted by García, bring development, progress, well-being, and connection between families to their communities and municipalities. The rail line's rich history in Guanajuato, dating back to 1877, adds to its significance. The project was attended by several dignitaries, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, Jesús Antonio Esteva, and the governors of Querétaro and Guanajuato. The governors' active participation underscores the importance of the Querétaro-Irapuato section, impacting regional development and connectivity.
