Candriam Embraces Sustainable Asset Management for a Brighter Future

Candriam, a leading ESG asset manager, is committed to building a more sustainable future by directing capital towards projects that promote sustainable and inclusive growth. The firm places sustainability at the core of its business activities and corporate practices, a commitment that has been a key part of its strategy since its inception.

With a comprehensive ESG approach, Candriam manages 90% of its €127 billion assets according to this strategy. The firm employs a proprietary and rigorous framework to evaluate companies and sovereign issuers on their contributions to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. This approach combines impact and sustainability by assessing how companies contribute through their business activities and management practices, reflected in proprietary ESG ratings and Environmental/Social Contribution Scores.

A central aspect of Candriam's ESG and responsible investment implementation is its proprietary ESG Analytical Frameworks. The firm uses detailed ESG scoring systems for corporate issuers, assigning Environmental (E) and Social (S) Contribution Scores based on business activity and stakeholder analysis. These scores, ranging from 0-100, influence whether a company qualifies as a sustainable investment under the EU’s SFDR regulation by meeting minimum thresholds, full ESG ratings, governance standards, and the Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principle.

Candriam's ESG approach extends to sovereign ESG analysis, exclusion policies, positive and negative screening, engagement and active ownership, and the support of sustainable and inclusive societal growth. The firm excludes sectors with negative sustainability impacts, such as tobacco, thermal coal, and controversial weapons, from all its funds. It selects issuers positively based on ESG criteria and excludes those detrimental to ESG goals or linked to controversies.

Candriam is engaged in active stewardship by voting on tens of thousands of shareholder resolutions annually and participating in around 50 collaborative initiatives for improving companies' sustainability strategies. The firm also supports sustainable and inclusive societal growth through its Candriam Institute for Sustainable Development, which funds projects in various sectors.

Over 75% of Candriam’s assets under management incorporate ESG analysis, underpinning investment decisions with responsible investment convictions and aiming for long-term sustainable growth aligned with global sustainability goals. Candriam adheres to the same principles in its asset management that it expects from the companies in which it invests.

Candriam's responsible investment strategy is built on three pillars: systematic integration of ESG criteria into investments, active stewardship programs, and measuring and transparently reporting the impacts of ESG. The firm prioritizes sustainability in corporate governance and promotes sustainability practices towards employees, customers, and collaborates with clients, governments, and academic institutions for the benefit of the world.

Candriam's CEO, Naim Abou-Jaoude, emphasizes the importance of collaboration with all stakeholders. The firm sees itself as a responsible citizen, not just an investor, and is committed to sustainability practices across the entire value chain. Candriam has been recognized in the asset management industry for its ESG engagement for over 25 years.
