Chanel Expands Horizons in Fine Watchmaking

By Cathrin Wißmann

In the tranquil workshops of Chanel's manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, a watchmaker meticulously assembles a timepiece, using tweezers to place a screw into the matte black case. This minute masterpiece contains 172 components, including gears, screws, and even rubies, all fitting snugly in their designated spaces. Such precision is the hallmark of Chanel's dedication to superior watchmaking.

The Parisian fashion house, renowned for its timeless elegance and fashion-forward designs, is now making waves in the world of luxury watches. Known for its jewelry collection since 1932, Chanel took until 1987 to introduce its first watches. Unlike many fashion brands that diluted their status by licensing low-quality watches, Chanel has focused on creating high-quality timepieces.

Two Decades of Innovation

Since 2016, Chanel's watchmakers have developed five new movements alone, a feat comparable to Porsche introducing a new car model every two years. This self-sufficient manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds is capable of crafting complications such as a chronograph or a flying tourbillon.

The tour de force of Chanel watchmaking is the "J12" model, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. This groundbreaking watch brought fresh momentum to the watch industry with its innovative use of ceramic, a material adopted by other brands due to its hardness, durability, and lasting shine.

A Timeless Unisex Design

Initially released in black and later white, the "J12" was a pioneering unisex watch. In contrast to traditional watchmakers who often ignored female consumers, Chanel's design appealed to both men and women with its cool, technically demanding design inspired by sleek IACC yachts from the America's Cup.

Commemorating the 25-year milestone of the 'J12', a collection of nine matte blue designs is unveiled, among which is the 'J12 Bleu Diamant Tourbillon'.

For the anniversary edition of the "J12," Chanel has once again embraced bold colors, introducing a dark, matte blue model. The watchmakers spent five years perfecting the ceramic tone and aligning it with the designs sketched by Chanel's Paris design studio under the direction of Arnaud Chastaingt.

Each "Bleu" series watch is handcrafted, and high-end models receive an additional touch. Each is built by a single watchmaker, ensuring a level of craftsmanship that is both artistic and precise. The petite manufactory is filled with such meticulously crafted pieces, each a testament to Chanel's commitment to excellence in watchmaking.

Quality Control Unyielding

Before each prototype leaves the manufactory, it must endure rigorous quality control tests. Run by two seemingly friendly gentlemen, this in-house torture chamber subjects watch bands to stretching, ceramic to hammering, and watches to drops from great heights. Each model must survive 3000 tests, a testament to Chanel's unwavering commitment to quality.

Chanel's approach to watchmaking is a unique blend of fashion-inspired design, innovative craftsmanship, and the integration of cleverly hidden functional elements. True to its roots, Chanel continues to push the boundaries of luxury watchmaking, seamlessly merging fashion and horology.
