Logica, a well-established UK IT services company, is set to be acquired by Canadian counterpart CGI. This acquisition, slated to take place soon, is poised to bring significant changes within the company and potentially reshape the UK IT industry.

Changes within Logica

As CEO of Logica since 2008, Andy Green will be stepping down following the acquisition. His departure, along with Gary Bullard, CEO of Logica's UK operations since September 2011, is expected to mark the beginning of a new era for the company. CGI is expected to introduce a team of their own senior managers to support the presidents of Logica's divisions, but the identity of Logica's future CEO remains undisclosed.

The Logica brand, however, will be retired, and the UK division will retain its current organizational structure under the leadership of Tim Gregory, currently head of CGI's European division.

Implications for the UK IT Industry

  1. Consolidation and Restructuring: The acquisition of Logica by CGI could lead to industry consolidation, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape within the UK market.
  2. Talent Movement: High-profile departures, such as Andy Green's, could signal broader changes in talent dynamics within the industry. This might lead to a redistribution of skilled personnel across different companies.
  3. Strategic Alignments: The acquisition could influence strategic alignments within the industry, potentially leading to shifts in how companies approach innovation, customer service, and market positioning.

Anthony Miller, managing partner at TechMarketView, approves of Logica being broken apart and combined with CGI's business units. However, he considers the acquisition of Logica by CGI a sad indictment of the UK IT industry, as it leaves no UK-owned sizeable IT services companies.

Before leading Logica, Andy Green had a successful tenure as CEO of BT's Global Services division. Many of the "old guard" from Logica, according to Miller, will still be running substantial parts of CGI's empire.

Logica is currently unable to comment on the report, but the industry awaits next week's official announcement with anticipation. The implications of this acquisition for the UK IT industry are far-reaching and will surely be a topic of discussion in the coming days.
