Heating up Langen's Future: Waste Heat District Heating Project Kicks Off

Central energy project commencement: Initiation of construction for a long-distance heating system

City life in Langen just got a whole lot greener. Municipality utilities have launched a huge infrastructure project aiming to transform the local energy landscape, beginning with a 3.5-kilometer-long district heating pipeline. This pipeline will eventually transport climate-friendly waste heat from a soon-to-be-built data center in the north of Langen, heading south, where it'll furnish numerous public buildings and existing district heating systems.

Breaking Ground with Style

Recently, the symbolic groundbreaking for this pioneering project took place at Robert-Bosch-Straße, with none other than Stadtwerke CEO Uwe Linder, Mayor Jan Werner, and other key players marking the start. The data center bound for that location is slated to pump out 28 megawatts of electricity from 2028 onwards, churning out a ton of waste heat that'll be fed into the newly constructed district heating network.

Digging Deep: The Tunnel Boring Challenge

At the heart of this project lies the new district heating pipeline stretching from Langen's north to south. To safely navigate under the B 486 highway and railway line, a so-called tunnel boring machine is necessary—an underground tunnel measuring over two meters in diameter and burrowed around ten meters deep. This subterranean marvel will clear space for district heating pipes, power lines, and water lines.

Construction Sites Galore: Citizen Park and Beyond

Construction for phase one has already commenced at the Liebigstraße construction site in the north, where 50-centimeter-wide district heating pipes are currently being laid. The pipeline route cuts through the future citizen park. Simultaneously, Stadtwerke is busy laying empty pipe bundles in parallel with the heat pipeline, with the intention of linking the data center's eventual electrical connection down the line.

Stadtwerke: Ready and Raring

According to Stadtwerke CEO Uwe Linder, "The energy and heat transition is a complex dance, but we, as a municipal utility with our highly skilled team, are well-prepared to lead the way, not just mandated by the coming Heat Planning Act in 2024, but also by the minute as the climate change warms up."

This project marks a significant stride towards sustainable energy provision and reducing reliance on fossil heat sources. The projected commissioning dates for the data center and the connected heat pipeline are both set for 2028. Stay tuned for more sustainability updates from Langen!
