Canadian Solar Signs Major Battery Storage Deals in Ontario
Canadian Solar has signed significant agreements for two major battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Ontario, Canada. The Elora and Hedley BESS projects, set to provide 420MW/2,122MWh to the province's grid, will ensure high system availability and predictable service revenues throughout their lifespan.
Canadian Solar has partnered with Aypa Power for these projects, inking battery storage agreements (BSAs) and long-term services agreements (LTSAs). The projects will deploy e-Storage's SolBank, a BESS solution utilizing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. e-Storage recently showcased improvements to its LFP technology at the ees Europe trade show in Munich, Germany, with its SolBank 3.0 Plus featuring a 'near zero battery degradation curve' during the first four years.
Delivery of the Elora and Hedley BESS projects is slated for the first quarter of 2026, with commercial operation expected in the first half of 2027. These projects will provide capacity through the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) long-term 1 (LT1) resource adequacy framework. The IESO recently initiated its LT2 RFP, releasing related documents at the end of June.
The Elora and Hedley BESS projects, totaling 420MW/2,122MWh, will bolster Ontario's grid capacity. Canadian Solar's agreements with Aypa Power and e-Storage's innovative technology ensure reliable, long-term service for the province's energy needs.
