Calgary Metro Buses select Nova Electric Buses to manufacture 120 Zero-Emission City Vehicles

Calgary Transit has taken a significant step towards modernizing and decarbonizing its transit system by partnering with Nova Bus to produce 120 LFSe+ fully electric city buses. The investment in Nova Bus buses, supported by the federal government, aims to increase the size of Calgary Transit's bus fleet and diversify its propulsion modes.

The contract, awarded on July 24, 2025, marks a 15-plus year partnership between Nova Bus and Calgary Transit. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027, with all buses expected to be in service by the end of 2028.

The LFSe+ buses, already proven in Canadian climates with successful deployments in Banff, Toronto, and Ottawa, will offer a similar look and feel to Calgary’s current Nova Bus compressed natural gas (CNG) models, making them familiar to passengers. The buses will be used primarily on shorter routes and during peak times to enhance service and reduce emissions in high-density areas.

Although specific details about charging options are not provided, the buses are battery electric, implying they will be charged at designated charging stations. The charging options ensure full adaptability to existing charging infrastructure and facilitate efficient route planning.

The transition to electric buses is part of a broader strategy to diversify and modernize Calgary Transit's fleet, moving away from diesel and gas-powered vehicles. A key benefit of this move is the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to Calgary Transit’s goal of lowering its carbon footprint.

The partnership between Nova Bus and Calgary Transit demonstrates a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability. The new electric buses are a remarkable achievement for both parties, and they are aimed at improving the well-being of the Calgary community. They will provide daily transit services for the people of Calgary and help reduce long-term costs for Calgary Transit.

In conclusion, this project aligns with Canada’s efforts to adopt cleaner transportation technologies and reflects Calgary Transit's commitment to sustainable public transit solutions. The investment in Nova Bus buses is a significant step towards Calgary Transit’s goal of decarbonizing its transit system.
