The primary objective of any business is profit generation. However, in high competition, an ancillary, non-essential activity often becomes a decisive factor for success: how entrepreneurs invest in community and city development.

Businesses in Krasnoyarsk learned to be accountable

Modern businesses are all about making a profit, but in today's crowded market, some businesses go the extra mile and invest in community development. Gone are the days of ruthless '90s commerce, as today's companies create additional advantages and boost their reputation by taking on social, volunteer, and charitable projects. So, how exactly can businesses help urban communities thrive?

In a city like Krasnoyarsk, successful businesses can contribute in a variety of ways, from responsible product development and improving the city's appearance, to aiding local organizations and people in need. With a city as vast as Krasnoyarsk, there's always room for improvement.

We chatted with local business leaders to learn if businesses can truly help make a difference, and specifically, if smaller businesses can contribute significantly to the betterment of the city.

"Over the past 20 years, we've certainly offered help to children's daycare centers, schools, and hospitals. Of course, we will continue to help! But I believe our main social mission lies in the improvement of the city," says Alexander Kliменков, CEO of OOO "Trading House Krasyok Krasnoyarsk." He adds, "Especially when it comes to reconstruction and capital repairs. By applying new, durable, and reliable technologies, we aim to maintain the original visions of architects, ensuring continuity, and showing respect to the city's heritage. Designing eye-catching facades in new microdistricts, where there are no architectural landmarks yet, is achievable. But creating a harmonious ensemble for entire districts, and even updating the facade of an old building while blending it seamlessly into the existing urban landscape, now that's a challenge!"

Companies like Polychrome VN are also eager to bolster city initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Krasnoyarsk residents. For instance, the factory recently donated materials for a retired World War II veteran's apartment renovation.

"This isn't just an act of charity, it's a gesture of gratitude and respect to the heroic generation," notes director of the company Dmitry Bezototchev. "And as a permanent endeavor, we've been helping neighborhoods in Krasnoyarsk through our 'Clean City, Clean Siberia' project by providing materials for paint jobs. During city-wide celebrations, we set up free play areas for kids and parents. We collaborate with educational institutions in our neighborhood by providing materials for repairs, such as classroom renovations."

Bezototchev emphasizes that for manufacturers, social responsibility includes producing products with minimal environmental impact. In their case, this means water-based paints. Despite being a part of the chemical industry, their products are significantly safer and more environmentally friendly than organic materials. By applying a scientific approach, they create products that are safe for health and contribute to creating a comfortable living environment – including antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and 'smart' paints that neutralize formaldehyde in the air.

So, small businesses in Krasnoyarsk can lend a hand in various charitable programs for residents. At the city's medical center "Almed," for example, special support is provided to vulnerable residents.

"The health of our young patients is a source of great pride for us," says Alexandrа Шестакова, the Chief Physician at the center. "Our goal is to provide lifelong medical support to our patients and their families, but not every individual has access to necessary medical services. That's why we implement the charitable program 'Almed Gives Every Child the Right to Breathe.' Our medical professionals offer free services to people from vulnerable socio-economic groups, including orphans, children in foster care, and those with disabilities."

Now in its seventh year, the center offers various charitable initiatives for children, starting with dental care. For Almed, charity isn't just a set of professional skills; it's a deep-rooted desire to help those in need. The mission of the doctor is to bring joy and wellbeing to all those who need it. In their practice, they abide by the principle: "Treat patients as if they were your own child or mother!"

The examples above showcase the many ways small businesses in Krasnoyarsk are participating in the city's life. In a city of over a million residents, there are countless similar stories. And the array of business activities is vast: from creating jobs and supporting the local economy, to fostering sustainability and smart urban development, innovative product diversity, and civic engagement. These contributions collectively create a more livable, vibrant, and resilient urban community.
