Brazil Leads Global Ocean Action with 2027 Rio Conference

A significant event concluded recently, marking a crucial step towards global ocean action. The launch event, themed around women's leadership and climate action, set the stage for the upcoming COP30 in Belém. It culminated with a session focused on 'Ocean Solutions in Action: Delivering on the Ocean Decade Challenges'.

Looking ahead, Brazil has taken a leading role in the Ocean Decade. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil (MCTI) is at the helm, coordinating national policy and hosting the 2027 Ocean Decade Conference in Rio de Janeiro, April 7–9, 2027. This flagship event, part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, aims to unite diverse stakeholders including governments, scientists, and the private sector. With up to 2,000 participants expected, the conference seeks to showcase achievements, refine priorities, and foster partnerships. It is both a global responsibility and a local opportunity for Rio de Janeiro, co-organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, Brazil's MCTI, and the City of Rio de Janeiro.

The 2027 Ocean Decade Conference in Rio de Janeiro promises to be a pivotal moment in accelerating ocean action. Building on Brazil's leadership in the Ocean Decade since 2021, this event will help refine priorities, facilitate partnerships, and inform dialogue at the 2028 United Nations Ocean Conference.
