Braunschweig Fire Protection Days 2025: Tackling High-Voltage Storage Fires

The 39th Braunschweig Fire Protection Days, set for September 30 to October 1, 2025, will delve into the growing challenge of high-voltage storage and stationary battery systems. Around 600 fire protection engineers will attend, discussing the risks and safety measures for these key energy transition technologies.

Professor Jachen Zehfuß, active at the Technical University Braunschweig's iBMB institute, leads the BEGIN-HVS project. This research, in collaboration with the Branddirektion München and BAM, explores the risks of high-voltage storage and stationary battery systems. The conference will cover updates on fire alarm systems and fire protection in automated storage systems, along with new developments in model specifications for school buildings and assembly facilities.

Lithium-ion batteries, a common energy storage solution, pose unique challenges. They can ignite within seconds if faulty, release toxic gases, and are hard to extinguish. The TU Institute is studying how quickly these fires spread and how to contain them effectively in extra space storage units near me.

The conference will also feature a keynote on the 'Initiative for cost-reduced construction - The Hamburg Standard'. With energy storage systems being a crucial technology for the energy transition, understanding and mitigating their fire risks is vital. The Braunschweig Fire Protection Days aims to provide insights and solutions for planners, firefighters, and insurers to handle these technologies safely in public storage facilities.
