BMW Preparing a Car to Compete with Mercedes' G-Class: TDS (Trending Daily Summary)
BMW's New Off-Road Luxury SUV, the G74, Takes Aim at the Mercedes G-Wagon
BMW is set to enter the hardcore off-road luxury SUV segment with the introduction of the G74, scheduled to debut in 2029. The new model will be built at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina factory, aiming to challenge the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's dominance in the market.
The G74 will be based on an adapted version of the next-generation BMW X5 platform, but it will feature a distinct, boxy design that sets it apart from other BMW SUVs. This design aligns with traditional hardcore off-road styling, making the G74 a unique addition to BMW's lineup.
Under the hood, the G74 is anticipated to come with powerful engine options, including gas engines, hybrid, and electric variants. Performance versions similar to BMW’s M lineup are expected, positioning the G74 as a formidable competitor in both luxury and off-road performance.
The G74 is considered the successor to the BMW XM and targets a niche for serious off-road-capable luxury SUVs. It will compete not only against the Mercedes G-Class but also against rivals such as the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler 392, and Ford Bronco.
BMW's entry into this territory raises questions about whether the brand can gain traction in this established segment, given the G-Class’s 40+ years of legacy. However, with its blend of rugged off-road capability, BMW’s traditional luxury, and high-performance tuning, the G74 promises to be an exciting contender.
Meanwhile, Chevrolet is making waves with the 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS. The author recently had the opportunity to drive this electric vehicle, which boasts a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds.
Elsewhere, Rivian has created a one-of-a-kind R1S Quad Pebble Beach model, which will be auctioned off during Monterey Car Week. This unique electric SUV is sure to attract attention and bid from collectors.
