Bavarian safety award granted to Ingolstadt for the initial time
Ingolstadt Wins 2025 Bavarian Traffic Safety Award for School Safety Improvements
The City of Ingolstadt has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Bavarian Traffic Safety Award, marking the first time the city has received this honour. The award, given annually since 1997, recognises outstanding commitment towards accident prevention, and this year's focus was on improving safety for children around schools.
The city's win was due to its specific traffic safety improvements at the Auf der Schanz elementary school. In the summer of 2024, measures were implemented to make walking and cycling safer for pupils. These efforts included the construction and upgrading of pedestrian crossings, the establishment of parent pick-up/drop-off zones, and the installation of bollards.
The improvements were designed to address the issue of "parent taxis," where parents often park and pick up their children in non-designated areas, causing traffic congestion and potential accidents. By creating designated zones, the city aimed to reduce this practice and ensure a safer environment for the school's children.
Rebuilding of bus stops was also part of the comprehensive safety enhancements at Auf der Schanz elementary school. These measures were intended to improve the overall traffic flow and safety around the school.
Ulrich Schäpe, head of the Office for Traffic Management and Geoinformation, was recognised for his contributions towards traffic safety at the award ceremony. The certificate of recognition was presented to him at the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior on July 1.
The 2025 Bavarian Traffic Safety Award ceremony was held at a festive event, with a photo taken during the presentation of the award to Uli Schäpe. The city of Ingolstadt's extensive traffic safety improvements at Auf der Schanz elementary school have undoubtedly contributed to making the city a safer place for its youngest residents.
