Signa Founder René Benko Faces Extended Detention Amidst Fraud Allegations
Austrian Authorities Conduct Searches at Benko's Residences in Germany
The infamous German real estate mogul, René Benko, is still behind bars. His detention was extended yet again by the Vienna Regional Criminal Court.
Part of ongoing German and Italian investigations into Signa Group's insolvency, house searches took place in Austria. Signa Development Selection in Vienna and associated objects were among the premises searched, as the insolvency administrator of the real estate development unit announced.
The Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed their involvement in the action. They are investigating René Benko, the signa Group's founder, for fraud and embezzlement in the millions. Investigations are ongoing regarding whether Benko and other Signa managers defrauded a Saudi Arabian state fund, as well as potential misappropriation of Signa Group funds.
Italian judiciary is also looking into Benko and other suspects in relation to real estate speculation. Charges include forming a criminal organization, tender manipulation, corruption, and fraud.
Keeping Benko Locked Up
The Viennese court asserts a "strong suspicion of guilt" in Benko's case and considers him a flight risk[5]. Despite Benko's lawyer's repeated pleas for his release, the court has denied these requests. Benko, a former billionaire, was apprehended at his Innsbruck villa in January and has been incarcerated since then[3].
The public prosecutor's office justified Benko's original detention due to a "strong suspicion of guilt" in various criminal offenses, such as tax evasion, insolvency offenses, and fraud[3].
A Fallen Tycoon
With a business empire that included the Galeria department store group, the luxury department store KaDeWe, and the Hamburg Elbtower project, Benko's success seemed unstoppable. However, internal corporate issues, combined with rising interest rates, energy prices, and construction costs[4], brought down the Signa Group.
