Approval of construction timeline granted for the upcoming Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility, sanctioned by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has taken a significant step forward in the development of the Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility (PLEF), located in western Kentucky. The NRC has completed its acceptance review of Global Laser Enrichment's (GLE) license application for the PLEF, paving the way for a formal review process.

GLE, an American uranium enrichment startup, has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to reopen the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The facility will be built adjacent to the old plant on land leased by General Matter. This project is set to benefit from the existing infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and DOE support, with potential economic and national security benefits.

Timothy Knowles, GLE's Licensing & Regulatory Affairs Manager, has expressed enthusiasm for continued engagement with the NRC for a streamlined and efficient licensing schedule. The review process is hoped to be timely, in line with President Trump's May 2025 Executive Order reforming the NRC.

The PLEF is projected to begin re-enriching the DOE's Paducah inventory of depleted uranium tails by 2030. This move is aimed at supporting cleanup activities and reducing dependence on foreign fuel sources. The lease for the Paducah facility represents the largest economic investment ever for western Kentucky.

Gov. Andy Beshear anticipates celebrating a key milestone for the reopening of the Paducah facility soon. The reopening of the facility is seen as an exciting and historic project, marking Kentucky's leadership in nuclear energy and strong partnerships at various levels.

GLE's mission includes leading efforts to re-establish Paducah's historic role in the U.S. nuclear energy ecosystem. The PLEF is expected to play a significant role in the domestic uranium supply chain, contributing to the nation's energy security.

This development follows the announcement earlier this week regarding General Matter's lease with the DOE. The lease signifies the private sector's involvement in the project, which is a significant step towards the revitalisation of the nuclear energy sector in the United States.
