Analyzing the Present Operational Procedures Through Value Stream Mapping!
The company has embarked on a transformative journey, partnering with Ernst & Young (EY) to revamp its business processes in support of new business objectives. This transformation aimed to drive higher revenue, improved growth and profitability, greater customer satisfaction, and superior employee engagement.
To kickstart this transformation, the Lean technique of Value Stream Mapping was introduced. A cross-functional team, none of whom had prior experience with Lean transformation or Value Stream Mapping, was assembled to lead this initiative.
The team began mapping the Current State process using a blank easel pad paper and sticky notes. The process was meticulously documented, capturing hundreds of process steps, dozens of unnecessary loops, and almost 200 pain points. The Current State process mapping revealed the existence of redundancies that had built up over years, functional silos, duplication of work, unnecessary iterations, and multiple points where the process doubled back on itself, leading to errors and quality defects.
Participants expressed a sense of liberation from the Value Stream Mapping process, as it allowed them to gain insights into what people in other departments were doing. The Current State mapping made significant strides towards improving employee engagement, as team members felt that the organization was making efforts to become a "best in class" experience.
As the first, critical step of mapping the Current State process was completed after many weeks, the team is now ready to move forward. The next step in the business process transformation is to map out the Future State process. Participants expressed excitement about the prospects for making improvements during the Future State process mapping.
The transformation has generated a buzz within the company, with word of mouth spreading quickly about the initiative. Everyone wants to participate, eager to contribute to the company's growth and success. As the transformation continues, the company looks forward to reaping the benefits of increased efficiency, improved customer satisfaction, and a more engaged workforce.
