Aircraft Operator Denies Payment Claim by Pilot
Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, is heading for another wage dispute as negotiations with the Cockpit Union (VC) have reached a deadlock. After seven unsuccessful negotiation rounds, an agreement was not possible due to a significant difference in demands regarding employer contributions to pilots' pension funds.
The union is pressing for Lufthansa to increase its contributions, a move that would more than double costs by around 228 million euros annually. However, Lufthansa's management deems this unaffordable and irresponsible, given the current financial climate. This impasse has led to a stalemate in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, the Cockpit Union has called for a ballot among its members due to the wage dispute. A union ballot for Lufthansa pilots is currently underway. Some pilots question the financial health of the airline, citing unclear financial results as a reason for suspicion.
In other news, Lufthansa is consolidating functions of its group airlines and plans to phase out all CRJ-900s from Cityline by 2026. Lufthansa Classic within the group is under scrutiny, with some suspecting that higher costs are deliberately booked to generate reform pressure.
Despite the ongoing disputes, Lufthansa continues to offer competitive salaries. For instance, a sample pilot at Lufthansa is offered a monthly salary of 12,400 Euros (10,000 basic + 3,000 allowances).
