- A substantial rise in overnight stays for tourism in Germany is noted.
Germany's vacation scene has seen an unexpected surge in popularity post-COVID-19, bucking economic challenges. One accommodation sector, in particular, has thrived during this period. Despite a stagnant economy, Germany's tourism sector smashed records in 2024. Hotels and other lodgings with ten or more beds recorded a whopping 496.1 million overnight stays, a 1.9% increase from the previous year and just 0.1% shy of the pre-pandemic record in 2019.
This resilience is also reflected in the foreign visitor count, although it hasn't quite returned to pre-pandemic levels. In 2024, international guests accounted for 17.2% of all overnight stays, up from 16.6% in 2023. However, they're still trailing behind the 18.1% share recorded before COVID-19. The German National Tourist Board (DZT) anticipates an even bigger foreign guest turnout in 2025, predicting around 91 million overnight stays.
The camping industry, too, has had an impressive comeback. Overnight stays at campsites have skyrocketed since 2019, amounting to almost a fifth more in 2024. Hotels, despite their setbacks, are still playing catch up, with an 2.2% deficit compared to 2019's figures.
There's also been a noticeable trend towards early bookings. People are eager to secure their vacation spots, especially for the summer, more so than in previous years. This early booking wave is expected to continue, with the German Travel Association (DRV) reporting a positive trend.
One thing that's clear is the tourism industry's ability to adapt and overcome challenges. Even during traditionally quiet periods like November, Germany's tourism sector has managed to maintain a steady demand.
